Introduction: Why the Names of Jesus Matter

Names in the Bible often carry deep significance. Jesus was given many names throughout Scripture, each revealing a different aspect of His character, mission, and relationship with us. At Swanson Christian, we love learning more about God’s names and finding unique ways to add them to gifts that remind us of His character. 

The Power Behind a Name

In biblical times, names were significant; they represented God’s plan for them and sometimes names reflected a characteristic of God displayed in their life. It was so important, God even changed the names of people at major moments in their life. Abram’s name changed to Abraham and Simon transformed into Peter. 

Likewise, Jesus has many names. The many names reveal His identity and plans for us. 

Our Favorite Names of Jesus and Their Meanings

Jesus (Yeshua) – “The Lord Saves” 

The name Jesus, derived from the Hebrew name Yeshua, means “salvation.” This name directly reflects His mission on earth—to save you and me from sin and restore our relationship with God.

“She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.” Matthew 1:21

Emmanuel – “God with Us”

This name fulfilled the prophecy that Jesus would be God in human form. Jesus’ birth signified that God was no longer distant; He walked among us, shared in our struggles, and made a way for us to be close to Him.

“Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Emmanuel.” Isaiah 7:14

Lamb of God – “The One Who Takes Away Sin” 

John the Baptist, Jesus’ cousin, recognized Jesus as the Lamb of God first. He was referring to the Old Testament sacrifices where a lamb was offered to atone for the sins of those in the Old Testament. Jesus as the lamb is an incredible image of the sacrifice Jesus gave so that we could be covered in His perfect blood. 

“The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!” John 1:29

The Way, The Truth, and The Life – “The Only Path to Salvation” 

Jesus made it clear that He is the only way to God. No philosophy, religion, or good works can replace Him. He is the embodiment of truth and the source of eternal life.

“Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” John 14:6

The Good Shepherd – “The Protector and Guide”

Jesus, as the Good Shepherd, cares for and protects His followers, guiding them to safety and provision.. By understanding the shepherd-sheep relationship, we uncover so many gems into Christ’s character and how He tenderly cares for us.

“I am the good shepherd. I know my own and my own know me,” John 10:14

Alpha and Omega – “The Beginning and the End” 

This name signifies Jesus’ eternal nature—He was there at creation and will reign forever. He is sovereign over all things, from the beginning of time to eternity. Why would we worry?

“I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end.” Revelation 22:13

Son of Man – “The Representative of Humanity”

This title emphasizes Jesus’s humanity and His role as the representative of mankind. Jesus is fully human, still today. He understands what it is like to be tempted yet overcome. He is our perfect example and the reason we can now have righteousness. 

“For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” Mark 10:45

Son of God – “The Divine Nature”

This name highlights the Divinity of Jesus. He is fully human, yet he is also fully God. It is challenging to comprehend how Jesus is God’s son, but at the same time one with God, however, this is the reality of His name as “Son of God.”

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.” John 3:16

Christ (Messiah) – “The Anointed King”

The title ‘Messiah,’ derived from the Hebrew ‘mashiach’ meaning ‘anointed,’ and its Greek equivalent ‘Christ’ (Christos), carries profound significance. The New Testament declares Jesus as the fulfillment of the Messianic prophecies from the Old Testament. His anointing, however, was not with physical oil but with the Holy Spirit (Acts 10:38). While Jewish expectations were not met by Jesus at first, Peter’s declaration, ‘You are the Christ,’ affirmed Jesus as the long-awaited Messiah.”

“Simon Peter replied, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”” Matthew 16:16

Mediator – “The Go-Between for God and Man”

Jesus, as the Mediator, bridges the gap between God and humanity. Being both God and man, his sacrifice allows for reconciliation, and he continually intercedes for us before the Father. This reminds me of the verse that mentions “Who is man that you are mindful of him?” (Psalm 8:4).

“For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus,” 1 Timothy 2:5

Practical Ways to Reflect on Jesus’ Names:

• Prayer: Use different names of Jesus in your prayers such as: “Jesus you are the alpha and omega. I trust you with my situation”
• Journaling: Write reflections on how each name of Jesus has been revealed in your testimony and life.
• Memorization: Choose a verse connected to one of His names and commit it to memory.

As you read the bible, consider a study of names you encounter and their meanings. Here are two ideas to get you started:

• Jesus brothers names: James, Joses (or Joseph), Simon, and Judas (or Jude)
• Jesus disciples names: Simon Peter, Andrew, James son of Zebedee, John, Philip, Bartholomew, Thomas, Matthew, James son of Alphaeus, Thaddaeus, Simon the Zealot, Judas Iscariot.
