Ephesians 4:11–12 — “And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ.”

Jeremiah 3:15 — “And I will give you pastors according to mine heart, which shall feed you with knowledge and understanding.”

1 Timothy 5:17 — “Let the elders that rule well be counted worthy of double honour, especially they who labour in the word and doctrine.”

The observance started in 1992 as Clergy Appreciation Day, and the idea came from Jerry Frear, Jr., who reportedly reasoned during a brainstorming session that if there’s a day for groundhogs, there ought to be one for pastors. That’s how it landed on the second Sunday of October. Frear was leading a Focus on the Family ministry that served pastors at the time.

Focus on the Family then began promoting Clergy Appreciation Month as a national observance in 1994 — so the day came first, the month followed about two years later. H.B. London at Focus on the Family was the main champion of the initiative; he spent roughly two decades there building resources for pastors.
