Why Motherhood is Kingdom Work

Motherhood is one of the highest callings. Every bedtime story, scraped knee tended to, and encouraging word spoken leaves an impact that extends into eternity. If we are honest though, sometimes we feel it is a “lesser calling.” This lie is an attack from the enemy, and he only attacks where he knows the greatest impact will be.

While it can be easy to get caught up in the daily demands, it’s important to remember that raising children truly is Kingdom work.

Motherhood REFLECTS the Character of God

The Bible reminds us that children are a gift from God. Psalm 127:3-4 says, “Children are a heritage from the Lord, offspring a reward from him. Like arrows in the hands of a warrior are children born in one’s youth” – our “arrows” will eventually be shot out to the world to make their impact, but we are the warriors responsible for their direction!

As mothers, we are entrusted with the responsibility of nurturing, guiding, and teaching the next generation. Proverbs 22:6 encourages us to “Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it.” Through both our words and our actions, we have the opportunity to point our children toward God’s truth.

Motherhood MODELS the Love of Christ

Children often do what they see modeled. When we serve others, show hospitality, extend grace, and are kind to others, we model the love of Christ to our kids.

Our counsel, guidance, and discipline (especially in the formative years) will shape our children’s character and values. When we intentionally invest in our children’s spiritual formation, we are building a foundation that will sustain them throughout their lives.

Psalm 144:12 paints a beautiful picture of this outcome: “Then our sons in their youth will be like well-nurtured plants, and our daughters will be like pillars carved to adorn a palace.” The care and attention we give to our children help them grow strong in character and faith.

Deuteronomy 6:7 reminds us of our responsibility to consistently teach our children: “Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.” Every moment, from mundane daily routines to special occasions, becomes an opportunity to shape our children’s hearts and minds.

Motherhood REACHES Beyond the Home

The impact of motherhood extends far beyond our immediate families. Mothers who have experience raising children can fulfill the Titus 2 commission by disciplining and mentoring younger mothers, sharing wisdom gained through years of experience.

Mothers unite together to support each other and help enforce biblical values among the greater community (be a good “Auntie”!). Proverbs 15:22 tells us, “Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers they succeed.” When mothers come together to offer support and guidance, the entire community benefits.

Proverbs 31:26-27 highlights this broader influence: “She speaks with wisdom, and faithful instruction is on her tongue. She watches over the affairs of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness.” A mother’s wisdom and diligence create ripples that extend beyond her home, influencing future generations.

Motherhood is the original “Influencer” program! The values and faith we instill in our children will impact the community, nation, world, and future generations.
